A special police task force executed 24 search warrants in Southeast San Diego and Logan Heights on Friday and Saturday, bringing to more than 100 the number of drug-related arrests made since the team was formed Nov. 25.

The task force, consisting of 20 uniformed officers and detectives from the street narcotics and street gang units of the San Diego Police Department, obtained the warrants after purchasing large quantities of heroin, cocaine, PCP and marijuana from street dealers, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.

Police Chief Bill Kolender has scheduled a press conference for Monday afternoon to announce the results of the task force.

Sgt. John Madigan said the operation marked the first time that the department’s street gang unit and narcotics detectives joined in a concerted effort to crack down on drug dealing by gang members.

“In the last couple of months, a series of gang-related problems in Logan Heights and the Southeast area has been increasing to the point where the community requested we try something to help them with this problem,” Madigan said. He added that the task force will continue to make arrests.

In one drug bust Saturday, police seized a bottle of PCP in the 3800 block of Hemlock Street and arrested a man and a woman on drug charges; five children were taken to the Hillcrest Receiving Home to check for possible exposure to PCP, Robinson said. An illegal alien at the house was released to U.S. Border Patrol agents.
