A scientist says China has asked for financial assistance and advice from Alberta to set up a bear farm as a source of ingredients for traditional Chinese medicine.

Sherman Weaver, executive director of Alberta’s Vegreville Environmental Center, said that the request was made during a visit last month by scientists from his center and the Alberta Research Council to Heilongjiang, Alberta’s sister province in northern China.

The farm’s main purpose would be to provide gall bladders and other organs used in traditional Chinese medicine, Weaver said.

Alberta scientists are experienced in the handling and physiology of large game animals, Weaver said.
