Political Rivalry Between Kennedys Reported
Joseph P. Kennedy II’s announcement last week that he will run for Congress came amid family tensions over who of his generation should be the first to seek public office, it was reported Sunday.
The Boston Herald, quoting unnamed sources, said speculation that Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy Jr. might seek the seat now held by House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr., who is retiring, or another political post was the source of the family dispute.
The paper said that Joseph Kennedy, 33, son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, made it known that he did not think his cousin, who is the son of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), should run. Ted Kennedy Jr., 23, decided in late summer not to seek office.
