Military Services Achieve Recruiting Goals but Percentage of Re-Enlistments Declines
The nation’s military services managed to meet their recruiting goals in fiscal 1985, but they did experience a small decline in re-enlistments, the Pentagon disclosed Tuesday.
The Pentagon had set an overall 1985 objective of recruiting roughly 301,900 men and women without previous military experience--plus another 14,600 men and women who had left the military but wanted to return--for a total of approximately 316,500.
The actual results essentially matched those objectives, with military recruiters signing up about 301,400 “first-timers” plus about 15,200 individuals with prior service, for a total of 316,600.
The Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps also managed to sustain their recent record performance in signing up high school graduates, with an overall total of 93% of the new recruits possessing a diploma. But re-enlistments declined from 67% to 64%.
