Bonnie Schiffman proves herself a superior practitioner of celebrity photography in a show of portraits taken for various magazines. She certainly understands that in this genre celebrities come first, portraiture second. Her glossy pictures would be of no interest if we didn’t recognize the grinning faces of, say, Alice Walker and Quincy Jones, forehead to forehead; a bummed out Lee Marvin, shot against a blazing sunset in the desert, or an apologetic Eddie Murphy.

Nice magazine work, but it reveals nothing. Apart from a sweet view of Mr. and Mrs. Erik Erickson on their front stoop and a couple of portraits of visual artists (a judicious Richard Diebenkorn, and Wayne Thiebaud looking embarrassed by being stuck in a silly kitchen setup), these subjects are going about their business of looking glamorous and entertaining us. (Irit Krygier Gallery, 7416 Beverly Blvd., to Jan. 18.)
