The Egyptian Supreme Court ruled Saturday that a military tribunal can legally try an Egyptian policeman accused of killing seven Israeli tourists in October, Egypt’s Middle East News Agency reported.

The agency said the court ruled that under existing emergency laws, the country’s president has the right to refer any case to a military tribunal.

Police Cpl. Soliman Khater, 25, has been charged with murdering seven tourists and trying to kill two others at a beach on the Gulf of Aqaba on Oct. 5.

The verdict is expected Dec. 28. If found guilty, Khater could be sentenced to death.

Defense lawyers had sought to have the case heard in an ordinary criminal court.
