A federal judge has ordered a February trial to decide whether an Oakland Fire Department hiring list violates the city’s affirmative-action policy.

U.S. District Judge William Orrick Friday ordered firefighter recruit training held up until after a trial to determine whether the tests that produced the 696-member list are valid. A group of black firefighters has argued that minorities are under represented on the list.
