Fifty skiers fell as far as 40 feet from a chairlift at Dillon, Colo., when a mechanical malfunction caused the cable to slip. An additional 320 skiers managed to cling to their seats despite the strong jolt. Helicopters lifted 22 of the injured to Vail or Denver, where nine of them, including a 12-year-old boy, were hospitalized in serious condition. Jerry Jones, president of Keystone resort, said those who did not fall sat in 23-degree cold for three hours while the lift was repaired.
