The first open-air testing of a man-made bacteria designed to rid crops of frost has been set for next month in the Salinas Valley, according to the state Department of Food and Agriculture. Advanced Genetic Scientists Inc. of Oakland received clearance from the department to spray the frost-resistant bacteria, called ice-minus, on a small plot of strawberries in Monterey County. The Environmental Protection Agency also issued a permit for the test despite opposition from environmentalists.
