W.E. Johnson, Presbyterian Minister, Dies

The Rev. William E. Johnson, former pastor of Southeast United Presbyterian Church, died Monday evening at his Hillandale Drive home of cancer. He was 49.

Johnson, a San Diego resident for 20 years, was pastor of Southeast United from 1973-82, when he left for a new pastorate in Denver. He returned to San Diego in 1984 because of ill health.

He was a member of Beta Kappa Chi chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, as well as a member of the Southeast Inter-Denominational Ministerial Alliance and Macedonia Masonic Lodge No. 1. He is listed in “Who’s Who Among Black Americans” and “Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.”

He received the Jack and Jill Inc. award for outstanding community service in religion, and in 1973 received the Man of Distinction Award from the Heartland Human Relations Assn. Johnson, a graduate of San Diego State University, received a master’s degree from Cal Western University and a doctorate in religion from Claremont Graduate School of Religion in Compton, Calif.
