The inmate population in California prisons has more than doubled since 1982 and now exceeds 50,000, the Department of Corrections reported. New prison beds are being added at a record pace, said Corrections Director Daniel McCarthy, noting that ground has been broken for six prison projects in the last month. California’s prison system, the largest in the nation, is now more than 64% over capacity.
