Dense Fog Hits Area Airports; Many Delayed

A dense shroud of fog shut down operations at Los Angeles International and several other West Coast airports this morning, forcing thousands of holiday air travelers to be rerouted, delayed or grounded.

Takeoffs and landings were restricted at Los Angeles International from 3:45 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. as the fog cut runway visibility to virtually zero, airport officials said. About a dozen flights due for Los Angeles were diverted to Ontario International, Las Vegas and elsewhere.

Fog continued to hamper air travel along the coast into the late morning. Bill Hastings, a spokesman for PSA, said at 10:30 a.m. that operations remained closed at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, as well as airports in San Jose, Reno and Eureka.

Takeoffs had resumed at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field. Hastings described conditions at Los Angeles, Seattle, Sacramento and Medford, Ore., as “marginal.”

“It just messes up our routing. Instead of a flight going to San Jose, we’ll send it to San Francisco or Oakland,” Hastings said.
