Ruined Kilchurn Castle in western Scotland, ancestral home of the Campbell clan, has been sold for “not much more than 50,000 pounds,” or about $70,000, according to a real estate agent.

“The price would buy a small apartment in Edinburgh,” agent William Jackson said Thursday.

Kilchurn, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, stands at the end of Loch Awe, 17 miles east of Oban. It was put on the market last summer by the dowager Countess of Breadalbane.

Jackson said that the buyer, a London businessman whom he would not identify, was among more than 600 people worldwide who asked about the castle. The buyer “has plans” for his investment but wouldn’t say what they were, Jackson said.

Kilchurn, now uninhabitable, was built in 1440 and is under government care as a historic monument. It reputedly cost so much to construct that it soaked up seven years’ income from the estate of Sir Colin Campbell, founder of the Breadalbane family.

The castle was abandoned as a residence in the 18th Century, about the time it was used as a garrison by the English army.
