UAW’s Starvation Diet

“Chrysler: The Allure of Outside Sources Grows” (Nov. 3) is very relevant to a very large problem that organized labor faces today.

The United Auto Workers are very aware of the tremendous problems that they face along with all other industrial unions in selling workable programs in labor contracts to their members.

From the standpoint of union leadership, a contract settlement must be reached with management that can be sold to the union rank and file. As this article so aptly points out, this most recent UAW-Chrysler settlement is much like a person starving himself to death by eating 1/100th of a calorie less each day.

As time passes the automobiles produced in this country will be produced with fewer and fewer workers.

The implication is not that in time the UAW membership will be a few thousand Ph.D.s in computer science, but rather that the direction is the responsibility of the management of organized labor--in this case the UAW.
