Restarting Delayed at San Onofre Plant
A malfunctioning bearing in a water coolant pump will keep the San Onofre nuclear power plant off-line until mid-January, authorities said. It will take Southern California Edison about two weeks to replace the bearing.
Unit 3 at the San Diego County plant was shut down Sept. 14 for refueling and maintenance. Chronic leaks were found in seals used in the cooling pumps, which a Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman said were not part of the nuclear system or related to safety.
