Roman Catholic Bishop John McGann led more than 4,000 abortion protesters in a demonstration outside an abortion clinic at Hempstead, N.Y. McGann, dressed in purple clerical robes, urged the protesters before the march to remain calm and peaceful and “let that silence be a very real testament--a silent scream for life.” Bill Baird, the clinic operator, said he hoped the church would be “tolerant” of the moral decisions of women who choose to have an abortion.
