May Department Stores will combine two units.

The St. Louis-based retailing company said the Strouss division in Youngstown, Ohio, will operate under the name of the Kaufmann’s division, which is based about 70 miles to the southeast in Pittsburgh. None of Kaufmann’s 11 stores or Strouss’ seven stores will be closed, but about 240 employees in Strouss’ central office will be laid off. May said it is attempting to find jobs elsewhere in the company for an additional 160 Strouss management employees.
