A chartered jet carrying the University of Nebraska football team landed safely Thursday at Lincoln, Neb., Municipal Airport after one of its three engines failed.

Mike Moran, an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration, said the No. 2 engine on the Lockheed 1011 failed while the plane was flying to Lincoln from Phoenix, Ariz. The plane has one engine on each wing and another in the back.

The Cornhuskers were returning from Arizona after losing to Michigan, 27-23, in Wednesday’s Fiesta Bowl.

As a precaution, fire equipment lined the airport runway when the plane landed at 5:30 p.m.

Investigators from the Flights Standards District Office in Lincoln were trying to determine the cause of the engine failure, Moran said.
