SDSU Plays Host to Colorado State

San Diego State will shoot for its second straight Western Athletic Conference victory when it plays host to Colorado State at 7:30 tonight at the Sports Arena.

The Aztecs (2-9 overall) began WAC play Thursday night by defeating the Air Force Academy, 69-50. Anthony Watson scored 16 points and Johnny Scruggs had 10 rebounds to help SDSU outrebound an opponent for the first time this season.

Coach Smokey Gaines will start 6-foot 1-inch guard Bobby Owens in place of 6-9 center Kevin Brown for the second straight game tonight. Watson and Scruggs will start at forward, John Martens will be the center and Creon Dorsey and Owens will play guard.

SDSU is again expected to frequently utilize a two-point guard offense with Dorsey and Tracy Dildy. Dorsey had 14 points against Air Force and Dildy had season-highs of 11 points and 9 steals.

Colorado State won its WAC opener Thursday night at Hawaii, 72-61. The Rams (5-7) had lost their previous six games.

Rich Strong, a 6-9 center, is Colorado State’s top player, averaging 16.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. He was a second-team All-WAC player last season.
