Mary Lund, the first woman to receive an artificial heart, is breathing well without the aid of a respirator, doctors at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis reported. Dr. Mark Pritzker described Lund, 40, as “awake, alert and talking” with visitors since a breathing tube was removed, and said she is now believed to have a 50-50 chance of surviving with the Jarvik-7 pump implanted in her chest on Dec. 18.
