Naming Holidays

I heartily concur with Sam Sutton’s letter in The Times (Dec. 4) regarding his proposal to change the name of Veterans Day to “Bureaucracy Day” as a more accurate portrayal of its current beneficiaries. There is no question that the vast majority of workers in general and veterans in particular reap little or no benefit from this “national holiday.”

I would also like to recommend that Washington’s Birthday, Admission Day, Columbus Day and Martin Luther King’s Birthday be included in the name change and be celebrated as Bureaucracy Day One, Two, etc.

These are all holidays, which, for the most part, bureaucrats enacted as direct benefits for themselves as days off, or indirectly, as attempts to convince voter blocs that they are keenly interested in doing honor to him for whom the holiday is celebrated.

I would venture to say that the vast majority of the taxpaying work force, be they white or black, veteran or Italian, benefit nothing from any of these holidays except, perhaps, that traffic is somewhat less on those days when officialdom and civil servants are sleeping late, and dreaming of yet other holidays to enact.
