Moral Majority leader Rev. Jerry Falwell said today he has agreed to serve as interim pastor of the Bangor Baptist Church, replacing a minister who resigned after admitting to an affair with a parishioner.

Falwell’s office confirmed he will serve as pastor until a permanent one can be found. He said during the weekend that he hoped parishioners who have left the Bangor church will begin to return, and he said the Rev. Buddy Frankland had assured him he would not seek to regain the pastorship.

The Moral Majority founder said from his Lynchburg, Va., church that he agreed to the temporary appointment because of the unique situation at the Bangor church.

“Buddy’s church has been one of the strongest in New England and it needs stability and help at this time,” he said.

The huge Baptist church has been in turmoil since October when Frankland, who founded the church 19 years ago, admitted to having an affair with a church member.

Church members began leaving the church in droves.
