The Arab League has vowed to support Libya if the United States or Israel attacks that North African Arab nation in retaliation for the Dec. 27 terrorist raids at two European airports, league sources said Sunday.

In a communique issued Sunday, the 21 active members of the Arab League--Egypt was suspended after making peace with Israel in 1979--said only that the organization had taken “appropriate measures” on the issues before it.

Sources at the league, however, said the delegates expressed “their total support for Libya in the event that this country is the object of any kind of foreign aggression.”

The participants reportedly discussed Libya’s fear of American and Israeli retaliation for the airport raids in Rome and Vienna and said any attack would challenge the entire Arab community.

The United States and Israel have blamed the Abu Nidal Palestinian faction for both attacks--in which 15 travelers were killed, including five Americans and an Israeli--and accused Libya of supporting the attackers.
