This month’s edition of California Lawyer magazine features an article that opines that lawyers should write like journalists to avoid legal briefs “full of grammatical mistakes and dangling participles.”

The story caught the attention of at least one influential local lawyer: U.S. Atty. Peter Nunez, who passed out copies of the story to his office staff.

Competition Between Hiring Surveys

A quiet battle is going on between two temporary employment firms over surveying area businesses to predict hiring trends.

Thomas Temporaries, a 15-year-old Irvine-based firm, last year began querying businesses in San Diego and throughout California about their next-quarter hiring plans. Thomas Temporaries officials readily acknowledge that their survey is a direct competitive shot at Manpower Temporary Services’ longstanding employer poll.

“We compete with Manpower head on,” said Kim Megonigal, who, with his father, founded Thomas Temporaries.

The two surveys are similar, although Thomas’ surveys query employers about the type of help they plan to hire and the salary ranges of those workers. That way, Thomas officials reason, they get information “for our company’s planning purposes.”

Manpower officials view that as more opportunism than data gathering.

“We just use the companies that we feel are indicative of trends, (regardless) of whether they use us or any temporary help at all,” said Philip Blair, co-owner of the local Manpower office.
