Pinchas Zukerman has announced he will resign as music director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra when his contract expires in June, 1987, because he would rather play the violin than make administrative decisions.

Zukerman said Wednesday he doesn’t plan to accept another post as music director, but would like to continue with the chamber orchestra.

Zukerman has led the orchestra on three Latin American tours and this year will take it on a 16-day tour of West Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Although Zukerman earlier expressed an interest in staying with the orchestra through the end of the decade, he said changes in his personal life, combined with the position’s continuing responsibilities, forced him to reconsider.

Zukerman was recently married to actress Tuesday Weld.

Since he became music director six seasons ago, the orchestra’s national and international reputations have grown, said A. William Sands, chairman of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Society. He said a search will begin immediately for a new music director.
