Dr. Milton Avol, the Beverly Hills neurosurgeon described by Los Angeles City Atty. James K. Hahn as “one of the premier slumlords in the city,” has paid $6,900 in fines and court costs to avoid going to jail for city code violations on an apartment building he owns at 463 S. Bixel St. Avol entered no-contest pleas last month to five counts of building and safety, health and fire code violations at the 35-unit building. In addition to paying the fines, his attorney presented evidence in Los Angeles Municipal Court that the violations have been corrected, including repair of broken windows and installation of a new roof, authorities said. Avol was sentenced last summer to serve 30 days in jail and another 30 days under house arrest at the Bixel Street building in connection with a previous case. That sentence is still under appeal.
