Soviet Anti-Drink Drive Said to Falter
The Kremlin’s drive against alcoholism has had little effect since it started seven months ago, the government newspaper Izvestia said Friday.
“The offensive has run dry”, it said, quoting several examples across the country. It called for a greater effort at all levels to convince people of the evils of drink.
In Kuybyshev, in southern Russia, illegal alcohol sales have tripled compared to a year ago, Izvestia said.
And in the central Russian city of Perm, nearly 5,000 people were taken to drying-out stations in the last five months, the same number as in the previous five months.
