The Tourism Department has authorized an 18% increase in prices at the nation’s hotels, to go into effect with the start of the winter season on Monday.

Alejandro Morones Ochoa, undersecretary of operations for the Tourism Ministry, said the increase will keep Mexico’s prices competitive with those charged in other countries but will still be lower in comparison with other tourist sites.

He said hotel rates have not gone up since last December despite increases in operating costs.

The number of tourists traveling to Mexico has fallen sharply since twin earthquakes rumbled through the center of the capital in September. Coastal resorts were not affected, with the exception of Ixtapa, where repairs are underway.
