A Thousand Oaks baby who was revived from a near-drowning after instructions were relayed by telephone was released in good condition Sunday from Los Robles Regional Medical Center.

The child, 1-year-old Justin Merle Schaffer, crawled out of his Donnick Street house Saturday and fell into the backyard pool. His grandmother, who was baby-sitting, discovered Justin, pulled him onto the pool’s deck and called the 911 emergency number, Ventura County Sheriff’s Lt. Hank Carrillo said.

Carrillo said the call was transferred to Sheriff’s Senior Deputy Don Lawrence, who described cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the distraught grandmother, Paulette Denny.

Denny repeated the instructions to her teen-age son, David, who revived the child through artificial respiration, Carrillo said.

Paramedics were sent to the home but Justin had resumed breathing by the time they arrived.
