U.S. District Judge Robert Keeton in Boston set aside a jury’s November verdict that Johnson & Johnson’s Technicare subsidiary infringed on two parts of a Fonar Corp. patent. Fonar’s suit charged that Johnson & Johnson’s machine for making pictures of the body infringed on a patent held by Fonar. The hospital business is closely watching the case because the expensive machines--magnetic resonance imaging equipment--are increasingly used as a way of diagnosing cancer and other diseases without X-rays or dye injections. Melville, N.Y.-based Fonar said it will appeal the ruling.
