Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace, faced by critics who are urging him not to seek a record fifth term, emerged after a weeklong hospital stay to deliver a “state of the state” speech in Montgomery that did not close the door on a 1986 reelection bid. Wallace was treated for a urinary tract infection.
