Times Opens New Bureau in Manila
The Times has opened a new bureau in Manila to strengthen its coverage of the Philippines and other nations in the region. This brings to 24 the number of foreign news bureaus staffed by Times correspondents.
The Manila bureau will be headed by Mark Fineman, who has just completed a four-year tour as Asia correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Fineman, who is 33 years old, was based in New Delhi and traveled widely, often covering developments in the Philippines.
He won the 1985 George Polk Award for his Asia coverage, which included a series on the Communist rebels in the Philippines. He was also awarded a citation for excellence last year by the Overseas Press Club for his coverage of India.
The Times had covered the Philippines from its bureau in Bangkok, which will now focus on other developments in Southeast Asia and continue to assist in the coverage of the Philippines.
Other Times bureaus are in London, Paris, Rome, Bonn, Warsaw, Moscow, Amman, Jerusalem, Cairo, Nairobi, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Peking, Tokyo, Toronto, Mexico City, San Salvador, Managua, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, the Caribbean, based in Miami, and at United Nations headquarters.
