Governor Will attend a Republican Party fund-raising dinner at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills tonight.

Will attend a luncheon for trade ministers of the United States, Canada, Japan and the European Economic Community at Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado on Friday.

Assembly Floor Action:

Martin Luther King Jr.: Approved on a 61-2 vote a resolution (HR2) by Assemblyman Elihu M. Harris (D-Oakland) commemorating the Jan. 20 holiday honoring the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Elizabeth Taylor: Approved on a 65-0 vote a resolution (ACR94) by Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) commending actress Elizabeth Taylor for raising research funds to combat AIDS. It went to the Senate.

Bills Introduced:

High School Athletes: AB2613 by Speaker Brown would require high school students to meet certain minimum academic standards to participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics. Athletes would have to maintain a C average and receive no failing grades in order to be eligible.

Senate Committee Action:

Farmers: The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill (SB55) by Sen. Henry J. Mello (D-Watsonville) to allow farmers to carry over net operating losses to reduce their state tax liability. A 6-0 vote sent the measure to the Senate floor.

Bills Introduced:

Child Care: SB1529 by Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara) would authorize tax credits for employers who set up child care facilities to be primarily used by children of their employees.

Miscellany New Press Secretary: Assembly Speaker Brown has hired Susan Jetton, a political writer for the San Diego Union for more than six years, to be his press secretary. Jetton, 41, will make about $60,000 yearly in her new job. She replaces Bobbie Metzger, who resigned from Brown’s staff a year ago to join a public relations firm.
