Two counts of murder with special circumstances have been filed against Robert Gregg Butler, 22, in the slayings of a popular Pasadena high school teacher and a student, the district attorney’s office said. Butler, a student and track star at Azusa Pacific University, was a close friend of Robert Jones, 47, a social sciences teacher at John Muir High School, who was found shot to death at his Pasadena home on Dec. 12, along with Ronald McClendon, 17, who had been staying with the teacher because of family problems. Jones had acted as an “informal guardian” to Butler since 1983, and Butler had often visited the teacher during college breaks, police said.
