Veteran point guard Johnny Moore of the San Antonio Spurs is out for the season with a rare form of meningitis, team officials and physicians said.

Moore, out of the lineup since Dec. 26, has what is known as desert fever, which is fatal if left untreated, team physician Richard Thorner said.

“If he progresses as anticipated, it is expected he will resume competitive basketball in time for the 1986-1987 season,” a statement said. Therapy, however, may take a year or more.
