Chargers Consider Other Training Sites

After holding training camp at UCSD for 10 years, the Chargers are evaluating other sites, according to Jack Teele, a team executive who coordinates facilities.

A move to San Diego State or possibly even UC Irvine is possible, but it’s considered more likely that the Chargers will remain at UCSD.

Coach Don Coryell expressed displeasure with the condition of the playing field at UCSD last summer. To remedy that problem, Teele said he has proposed that intramurals end by mid-June to allow sufficient time for preparation of the field.

Another problem at UCSD is that the dining hall used by the Chargers will be closed, meaning that the team likely will have to shift to another dorm area with nearby dining facilities.

As an alternative to UCSD, Teele, along with Charger business manager Pat Curran and equipment manager Sid Brooks, recently toured the San Diego State practice and housing facilities.

Teele said no decision is likely before mid-February.
