AT&T; said it will broaden direct dialing overseas.
In a filing with the Federal Communications Commission, the company said it plans to introduce international direct-dial service Feb. 19 from the United States to Ascension Island, Bangladesh, Benin, Bulgaria, China, French Guyana, Gambia, Guadeloupe, Macao, Togo and Zaire. If the proposal is approved, it will bring to 146 the number of countries and territories that American Telephone & Telegraph customers can call without operator assistance. In a separate announcement, the company said it plans to phase out data terminal manufacturing at its Skokie, Ill., facility, eliminating about 800 of the facility’s 2,000 jobs.
