Cherokee Group Logs Strong 4th Quarter

Cherokee Group, a North Hollywood-based apparel maker, said its operating earnings for the fiscal fourth quarter ended Nov. 30 were up about 73% from the year-ago period, on a sales increase of just 4.4%.
Net income figures were not available, but operating earnings for the quarter were $1.2 million, up from $693,000. Sales were $21.2 million.
For the year, the company said, unaudited operating earnings were up 59%, to $4.3 million. Sales were up 17%, to $85 million.
Company President Robert Margolis attributed the results to continued strength in Cherokee’s apparel divisions and to the turnaround of its shoe operations, which lost money in 1984 and account for a third of sales.
