Gov. George C. Wallace today refused to say whether he will seek an unprecedented fifth term as governor despite the decision of his press secretary to seek the office.

“I’m able to run for governor. I’m able to be governor again,” Wallace responded to questions about his health at a news conference. “But I’m not sure. I haven’t decided that yet.” Wallace, who has been hospitalized seven times since winning a fourth term in 1982, said he would announce his plans within a month. His press secretary and longtime friend, Billy Joe Camp, had said he was resigning to seek the governorship and sources viewed this as a strong indication that the 66-year-old Wallace was quitting politics.
