Lawndale : Longer Hours at City Hall

Share

City Hall will open an hour earlier and remain open an hour later beginning on March 3 in a four-month experiment with flexible scheduling for city employees.

The new hours for city offices will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The City Council om Monday gave its blessing to the scheme in which employees will shift the times they start and end their work days.

One group will work 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; another group will start at 8 a.m. and finish work at 5 p.m.; a third will start at 9 a.m. and leave at 6 p.m.

An anticipated reduction in personal time off--because employees will be able to schedule medical and other appointments more easily--is considered the chief advantage to the city.

During the experiment, city officials will monitor employee sick leave, vacation time, tardiness, overtime, accident rates and labor costs, as well as public response to the extended hours. At the end of the four-month period, employees will be polled to gauge their attitudes to the new work schedules.

City officials say the experiment’s only cost will be for the additional electricity needed for extended hours.
