Glendale Curbs Pushcart Vendors

The Glendale City Council has adopted an ordinance banning sales from pushcarts on city sidewalks.

Council members voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to prohibit the sale of anything on public property from non-motorized vehicles and to limit sales from motorized trucks to 10 minutes in any one location. However, motorized trucks can obtain city permission for extended stays at some locations, such as construction sites.

The ordinance is aimed at hot dog vendors and a growing number of catering trucks that have recently appeared in the city, sparking complaints of unfair competition from restaurant owners.

Council members said pushcart vendors may operate on private property, such as in plazas or at entrances to office buildings, provided they obtain permission from the property owner and meet all other city regulations.

Councilmen John F. Day and Carl Raggio voted against the ordinance, saying it is an undue regulation of private enterprise.
