Orange County Area Roundup : Athletes in Action Will Meet SCC
Athletes in Action will bring its best-ever shooting basketball team to Costa Mesa at 7:30 tonight to play Southern California College in an exhibition game.
AIA (22-6) comes into the game shooting 57% from the field and 79% from the free-throw line. It has beaten No. 10 Nevada-Las Vegas, No. 18 Alabama-Birmingham, Pepperdine and Marquette.
AIA has several former collegiate standouts on its roster.
Among them are former Cal State Long Beach forward Michael Wiley (who played for San Antonio and the Clippers in the National Basketball Assn.), Lorenzo Romar (University of Washington, Golden State and Milwaukee), Reid Gettys (who played on three Final Four teams at Houston) and Calvin Duncan (the Chicago Bulls’ No. 2 draft choice this season out of Virginia Commonwealth).
Santiago High School’s athletic department is looking for coaches for spring sports. Girls’ and boys’ head track coaches are needed, along with an assistant coach. The Anaheim YMCA will start its water experience class for infants, from birth to 1 year, the week of Monday, Feb. 3. The class, called Tiny Bubbles, will be taught in an indoor, heated pool.

The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce Professional Sports Committee is sponsoring its second annual seminar for baseball fans at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in the Emerald of Anaheim hotel.
Tom Seeberg, the Angels’ director of public relations, will conduct the meeting with the help of Angel players Ron Romanick, Kirk McCaskill, Craig Gerber and Darryl Miller.
Also expected at the meetings are Bobby Knoop and Rene Lacheman, coaches; Mike Port, general manager; Bill Bavasi, director of minor league operations; and John Hayes, vice president of marketing. Adult three-on-three basketball leagues are forming in the City of Orange. There are three divisions: open, 6-foot 3-inches and under, and 6-0 and under. Team entry is $45. Sign-ups are from 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. at the Recreation Department at 326 E. Almond Street. For more information, call 998-0189.
Time Machine USA, an Orange County youth track program, is looking for parents and coaches to volunteer time on a regular basis between Feb. 3 and July 14.
There is a special need for hurdles and jump coaches. Practices are Monday through Thursday from 4:30-6 p.m., with meets on the weekends.
Sign-ups for boys and girls, ages 7-17, will be at 7:30 tonight at Mercury Savings in Mission Viejo. Larry Knuth, USC cross-country coach, will speak at the sign-up.

Saddleback College linebacker Jay Wilkerson signed a football scholarship with Fresno State. The Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. also got Saddleback’s Moses Paskowitz, who signed with Nevada-Las Vegas. Further signings from Saddleback include Yepi Pauu and Tracy Ruthkowski, both of whom accepted scholarships from the University of Hawaii, defensive back Allan Roman, who signed to play at Vanderbilt, and Alex Leausa, also a defensive back, who will play at San Francisco State. . . . Orange Coast College linebacker Lance Neal signed to play his next two years at San Jose State. Neal, an All-Mission Conference choice last season, had 92 tackles for the Pirates. . . . Several county residents were selected in the major league winter amateur free agent draft conducted 10 days ago.
