Haynes, Arceneaux Lift SDSU Women Over Pacific, 97-80

Shelda Arceneaux and Jessica Haynes combined for 59 points and 22 rebounds Thursday night to lead the San Diego State women’s basketball team to a 97-80 victory over the University of Pacific in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play at Peterson Gym.

Arceneaux scored 32 points and Haynes added 27 as the Aztecs evened their PCAA record at 1-1 and improved their overall mark to 7-8. Arceneaux and Haynes also had 11 rebounds each to help give the Aztecs a 44-28 edge in that department.

Dee Dee Duncan scored 14 points, all in the second half, and Brooke Meadows scored 11 and had 9 rebounds for the Aztecs.

Janet Whitney led Pacific (0-3, 6-10) with 25 points. Shellie Linden had 17 and Gretchen Meinhardt added 16.

Pacific’s last lead was 12-10. The Aztecs built a 39-26 advantage with eight minutes left in the first half. But then San Diego State went cold, and Pacific cut the lead to 44-41 by halftime. The Aztecs regained their shooting touch in the second half and had leads of six to 10 points most of the way. They pulled away in the final minutes when Pacific got into foul trouble.
