Joaquin Andujar of the Oakland A’s gashed the middle finger of his pitching hand in a freak accident Friday night in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, and needed 10 stiches to close the wound.

Andujar, 33, suffered the injury at a birthday party when he reached under a metal chair and attempted to move it. He minimized the injury, saying it should not affect him for the coming season.

Andujar, 21-12 for St. Louis last season, was traded to Oakland in December.
