The union representing pilots at Eastern Airlines said today it is asking for a strike vote from its members, although a walkout could not take place until after the end of a 30-day cooling-off period.

Negotiations between the debt-ridden airline and the pilots union broke off Sunday night, triggering the government-imposed cooling-off period that would end three days before a deadline set by the airline’s creditors for labor concessions.
