Calaveras County sheriff’s deputies walked off their jobs to protest the county’s contract offer. A local Superior Court judge issued a temporary restraining order to bring the 28 striking deputies in the county of 23,000 back to work, but none complied. “The county’s position is that it (the walkout) is unlawful,” said John Crane, county administrative coordinator. Sheriff Claud Ballard and six other non-striking officers said they will work 12-hour shifts. No major crime problems were reported. Crane said a two-year offer, rejected by deputies, would have provided a 4% pay hike retroactive to October, when an earlier contract expired.
