The Pentagon shipped toxic wastes to a California dump even though the EPA had cited the facility for environmental violations and stopped dumping its own waste there, a federal report said. The General Accounting Office report said defense installations sent 6,442 tons of toxic waste to Chemical Waste Management Inc.’s Kettleman Hills disposal facility for seven months after the Environmental Protection Agency banned the site in November, 1984. The EPA has no authority to prohibit other federal agencies from using dumps that violate environmental standards but it can inform other agencies on locations of environmentally sound disposal sites.
