United States and Philippines

Share

The United States apparently is playing into the well-conceived, long-range self-perpetuating political plans of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. For all Allan E. Goodman knows, the communist situation and the New People’s Army statistics that he mentioned in his article (Editorial Pages, Jan. 15), “Prepare for the Worst in the Philippines,” are government-supplied. Marcos knows too well that a communist threat of a Philippine takeover will rush the United States to his side, overnight.

The Filipinos are angry and fed up with Marcos and they want him out. The Filipinos have become angry and fed up with the United States and they wanted the bases out. This is because the Filipinos, by the turn of events, have judged the United States guilty by association with Marcos. The reason? The Filipinos cannot understand why the great champion of democracy and advocate of human rights unceasingly supports an infamous dictator.

I would not be surprised at all if on Feb. 7, NPA sympathizers terrorize voters and force them, under the gun, to vote for Corazon Aquino. In effect, the communist threat will be magnified, Marcos will declare the results of the election void, and the United States will pour more dollars to Marcos to fight communism.

Lost amid the confusion are the NPA sympathizers who are actually active enlisted men who have been ordered by the notorious strategist and commander-in-chief to stage the scenario where the virtues of democracy will be glorified in action.

I have always wondered how President Marcos is able to fool the United States all the time. I have always known, however, that all of the Filipino people can only be fooled some of the time.
