Larry K. Lester, a member of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education, announced Tuesday that he will not run for a second term.

In a prepared statement, Lester noted the “psychic rewards that serving in this capacity has provided me” and pledged to keep working for policies that “promote among our students the cultivation of those individual skills and habits of mind which characterize truly educated persons.”

Lester, a stockbroker who led an organization opposed to school busing before being elected to the five-member school board in 1981, will finish his term in December. He served as school board president, a post that rotates among board members yearly, in 1985.
