Maywood : Fire Code Violations

Share

The owner of a furniture manufacturing store in Maywood has pleaded no contest in Huntington Park Municipal Court to three misdemeanor counts of fire code violations.

City Attorney Cary Reisman said Robert Vener, owner of Vertex Furniture Manufacturing Co. on District Boulevard, was sentenced last week to three years’ probation, fined $1,500 and ordered to pay $2,000 to the City of Maywood for the cost of its investigation. Vener must also correct the outstanding violations, which include failure to maintain a proper dust collection system and have a proper spray booth.

The company, Reisman said, has been a “fire safety problem for years.”

An August inspection report by county Fire Department Capt. Darrell Higuichi and Fire Inspector DeWitt Morgan listed numerous state health and safety, fire code, and building and safety code violations that must be remedied. These violations included failure to provide legal exits, provide a proper spray-gun-cleaning tank and repair the sprinkler system. The report stated that the property “is in such a dilapidated condition that some time is going to be required to bring the facility back up to code.”

To ensure that the violations are being corrected, surprise inspections will be conducted every two to four weeks.
